MBBS Studies Abroad on the Eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary

The Director of Education Pacific Agency (EPA) congratulates Miss Gabriellah Kerry and Mr Joseph Imaka who flew out on the eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary to pursue MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) in the People’s Republic of China.

Kerry who hails from Madang Province said it was indeed an exciting independence gift of opportunity to study MBBS in China. “Lately many Chinese medical doctors have come to PNG to carry out medical missions and perform difficult surgeries in POM General hospital to save ordinary PNGean lives and that has prompted me to choose China to do my MBBS”, said Miss Kerry. “I look forward to equipping myself with the latest and advanced medicine, laboratories, technology and knowledge in the field.”

Coming from a little-known village of Mongai in the Buin District in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Mr. Joseph Imaka was over the moon when he flew out from POM to Guangzhou in China on the eve of PNG 50th Independence Anniversary.

“I am excited to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a medical doctor just when PNG turns 50. We have a lot of challenges in AROB in medical fraternity with shortages of medical doctors, medicine and general health services. I plan to study well, graduate with a bachelor degree in Medicine and come back and service my people in AROB”.

“It was indeed a privilege for us to be considered through EPA program. With EPA, our application for admission, Chinese visa application, flight arrangement and pick up services in China were outstanding and second to none,” said the MBBS students.

The EPA Director said EPA has been honoured to help students not just these two but many other hundreds of students for undergraduates and post graduates from all throughout PNG and the Pacific for the past 15 years. “EPA is contributing to the Somare Dream to educate our future doctors, engineers, academics, scientists and leaders of PNG. These amazing people have done their studies in China.

EPA Director said some of the EPA’s products are Dr. Yalinu Poya, Dr. Steven Ales (Unitech Lecturer), Jeffers Teargun (Msc, PhD Candidate & Ramu NiCo HR Deputy General Manager), Loretta Rato, Msc (Ok Tedi Chemical Researcher), Marcus Rahaman (Air Nugini Safety Engineer), Samuel Ray (CEO, PNG Christian Professional Network), Lucas Kupal MBA (PNG Ports), Henry Pawako MBA (PM & NEC Office), Samson Kandato MBA (Ombudsman Commission), and many others.

On the eve of Independence Anniversary, the Director announced that EPA is proud to contribute to the human resources development of PNG.

EPA Alumni Launch

On 25th August 2018, EPA has launched its alumni and website. The event coincided with launching of books published by EPA graduates including IT Learning for Primary School Students and SMEs in PNG.

Former Kandep MP and Minister for Civil Aviation & Transport Hon. Alfred Manase officially launched EPA, its alumni and website. Whilst launching these events, Hon, Manase said PNG is lacking in innovative technical expertise and structural engineering and technology. These are the expertise that make China developing faster and other developed nations are considered as first world countries.

“The launching of EPA and its associated activities is timely to bridge this knowledge and skills gap. EPA provides this bridge for our smart students to attain usable qualification in innovative technology and structural engineering to develop our PNG”, added Minister Manase.

EPA Director Mr. Jeffers Teargun Heptol said that EPA was birthed out of care and concern because many of our smart students are filtered and pushed on to the streets through our bottleneck education system in PNG.

“So far EPA has helped 200 students to attain undergraduate bachelor degrees in various majors, over 50 post graduate students to attain masters and PhD qualifications”.
